A Signing Ceremony for the Specialized Border Guard Equipment at the Military Institute of the Committee for National Security of the Republic of Kazakhstan on Tuesday, June 20, 2006 at 11:00

June 20, 2006

On June 20, 2006, as part of U.S. government efforts to assist in the fight against drug trafficking in Kazakhstan, U.S. Ambassador John Ordway provided to the Head of the Military Institute, Brigadier General Bauyrzhan Yelubayev, equipment to be used in specialized training sessions on drug identification and the search of vehicles. The equipment was funded through the U.S. Embassy’s Office for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement (INL).
The equipment provided by Ambassador Ordway to the Military Institute will permit cadets to be trained to use equipment located at posts to which they will be assigned. The signing ceremony for the provision of the equipment was held at the Military Institute of the Committee for National Security of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
In February 2005, an identical set of equipment needed to search vehicles for illegal narcotics was transferred to the Border Guard’s Aul and Zheshkent posts on the Kazakhstan-Russia border.
It is planned that a similar set of equipment will be acquired and transferred to Merke and Novovoskresenovka posts on the Kazakhstan-Kyrgyzstan border in the fall 2006.
