U.S. Chargé D’affaires Opens American Corner In Kostanai

May 21, 2009

U.S. Chargé d’affaires Kevin Milas will open a new American Corner at the L. Tolstoy Kostanai Oblast Universal Scientific Library on May 25 at 10:30.  The American Corner, a project undertaken jointly by the U.S. Embassy and the library, will provide current and reliable information about the United States and will serve as a venue for a variety of events and activities.  Chargé Milas will be joined at the opening ceremony by Deputy Akim of Kostanai Oblast Serik Bekturganov and library director Gulzhameriya Kazina.

The library is providing a room for the American Corner, as well as an English-speaking American Corner coordinator who will help visitors interested in American culture.  The American Corner will be open to the public from 14:00 to 18:00, six days a week.  Its multimedia materials, books, and periodicals will be accessible to the public.

The U.S. Embassy is providing the American Corner with reference materials, fiction and non-fiction books, CDs, and video resources that cover a broad range of American culture and history.  This donation is part of the embassy’s American Corners program, which seeks to inform and engage audiences across Kazakhstan by working with the libraries that host the corners.  Together, embassy and library staff use corners to host many different kinds of programs that will expand understanding of the United States, such as discussions featuring guest speakers from the United States, master classes given by American musicians, movie nights showing American films, and exhibitions of American art and photography.  At present, there are nine American Corners in Kazakhstan, located in Almaty, Oskemen, Karaganda, Shymkent, Uralsk, Atyrau, Petropavlovsk, Aktobe, and now Kostanai.
