Jazz Duo From New York Performs in Almaty and Astana
April 25, 2008
The U.S. Embassy-sponsored concerts of Rory Stuart & Ari Hoenig, a jazz duo, will be held in Almaty on Friday, April 25 and in Astana on Saturday, April 26. The American musicians have been invited to participate at the Almaty Jazz festival organized by Tagir Zaripov, director of the Almaty Youth Jazz School.
Rory Stuart, a jazz guitarist and composer, based in New York, who has been fortunate to play as a sideman with a wide variety of other jazz artists, and to lead or co-lead his own groups since 1982. According to Rory Stuart, he has been particularly influenced by the musicians John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk. Jazz Times magazine called him “perhaps THE most innovative straight-ahead jazz guitarist to emerge in years."
Ari Hoenig is a jazz drummer, composer, and educator known for his unusual and intense approach to drumming emphasizing complex rhythms in direct harmony with other group members. He currently leads a group that makes regular appearances in New York jazz clubs including the 55 Bar and the Blue Note, in addition to performing worldwide.
It is the first time the duo is traveling to Central Asia—for just two days in Kazakhstan. In addition to the concerts in Almaty and Astana, they will have a busy program of workshops for children and music students.
The performance in Almaty will be held at the Children’s Palace (114 Dostyk Avenue) at 7 pm, and in Astana – at the Music Academy (65 Pobedy Avenue) at 5 pm.
