U.S. Embassy Cleans the City to Celebrate Earth Day

April 22, 2009

On April 22 at 12:00 PM, volunteers from the U.S. Embassy in Astana will mark Earth Day by cleaning up a sidewalk along the Karaganda Highway.  This sidewalk, suggested by the Akimat of Astana’s Almaty District, stretches from the road police station to the village of Kuygenzhar.

Earth Day, April 22, is a global holiday celebrating the environment and a time for all people to assess the work still needed to protect the natural gifts of our planet. Earth Day celebrates its 39th anniversary in 2009. It initiated in the U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson, a long-time conservationist, in 1970 as a protest movement against man-made destruction of the environment. Today it has evolved into a global celebration of the environment and commitment to its protection. The history of Earth Day mirrors the growth of environmental awareness over the last three decades, and the legacy of Earth Day is the certain knowledge that the environment is a universal concern.

For more information on Earth Day celebrations, please contact the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in Astana or the U.S. Embassy Branch Office in Almaty.
