On September 25 in Astana, the United States Embassy and the
Museum of
Contemporary Art presented a photo exhibit
The Landmarks of New York. The Landmarks of New York is a ground-breaking exhibition of 81 black and white photographs with descriptive text depicting outstanding New York City landmarks. The exhibit will travel to 45 countries between 2005 and 2008 throughout Southeast Asia, Central Asia, Eurasia, Europe, the Pacific, the Middle and Near East, and Central and South America.
It was commissioned in 2005 to mark the 40th anniversary of New York’s Landmark Preservation Act. The collection was based on Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel’s definitive history and guide book The Landmarks of New York: An Illustrated Record of the City’s Historic Buildings.
The photographs portray the life and times of one American city from its origins through the colonial and early national periods to its subsequent emergence as a metropolis. Among the photos are iconic office skyscrapers like the Chrysler and Flatiron Buildings, the New York Public Library and Ellis Island Immigration Center as well as universities, public housing, parks, factories, immigration centers, hospitals, churches, and train stations.
The exhibit will run at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Astana through October 25 and will then travel to Almaty.
