International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking

On June 26, 2009, Transnational Criminal Affairs Officer Anthony Beaver represented the U.S. Embassy at the and Illicit Drug Trafficking. The event was attended by the Ministry of Interior’s Committee on Combating Drugs, representatives of youth NGOs, diplomats from the Czech Republic and Russia, and a representative from UNODC. A time capsule with messages from young people of various countries to 2030 was buried in the yard of a new school and covered with a memorial stone. In addition, attendees planted three trees in the yard near the stone. Prior to the ceremony, youth paraded through the city spreading an anti-drug message as part of the “Astana: A City Without Drugs” progam.
