U.S. Embassy and Almaty's Film Archive Screen Historic Kazakhstani Documentaries

Astana’s National Archive of Film and Photo Documents

Astana, March 2, 2007

On March 2, the U.S. Embassy in Astana, in cooperation with Almaty’s Central State Archive of Film and Photo Documents, screened nine historical documentaries culled from the more than 100,000 meters of film negatives and magnetic films restored through the U.S. Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation.

Speaker of the Senate Kassymzhomart Tokayev, U.S. Ambassador John Ordway, and Minister of Culture and Information Ermukhamet Ertysbayev were among the guests.

The films, shown at Astana’s National Archive, cover the period of Kazakhstani history from 1920-1970. Because these works have been saved, the public and scholars, both in Kazakhstan and abroad, have gained a valuable window and a particular perspective on the culture of two significant historical periods.
