Information Resource Center (IRC)
The Information Resource Center (IRC) is an integral part of the Public Affairs Section of U.S. Embassy in Kazakhstan. The IRC offers information about American political, social, and cultural life. Researchers and professionals can visit the IRC and use the latest in reference collection and Internet technology to locate specific documents and find answers to questions about U.S. government and institutions, legislative developments, foreign and domestic policies, and social, economic, political, and security issues. Researchers and professionals who are unfamiliar with the new technology may learn how to use both Internet and CD-ROM technology at the IRC.
The reference collection at the IRC consists of about 1,000 volumes including encyclopedias, atlases, handbooks, almanacs, and yearbooks. The IRC provides information on current events as well as biographical data, statistics, and bibliographic information on a wide range of subjects.
Electronic & Multimedia Resources
Members of the IRC can request access to eLibrary USA, an online library offering resources about learning English, American history and culture, health, business, and more. eLibraryUSA is free to use, and provides access to many online databases and encyclopedias including Encyclopedia Britannica, Gale Academic OneFile, Project Gutenberg, and Public Library of Science.
In addition to computers with free Internet access, Kindle e-readers and iPad tablets are available to IRC patrons. Each Kindle is pre-loaded with eBooks, and can be viewed at the IRC.
The IRC offers various programs to enrich patrons’ knowledge of American culture, education, and the English language. Webchats with American higher education professionals on topics such as “Study in the US” are programmed regularly. The IRC also hosts English language discussion clubs. The IRC’s staff is available to answer questions and assist patrons in accessing online and print resources.
