U.S. Citizen Services
Registration with the U.S. Embassy
All U.S. citizens residing in or visiting Kazakhstan are encouraged to register online with the U.S. Embassy Consular section. Registering upon your arrival greatly facilitates our ability to locate you in the event of an emergency. Registration also allows us to replace your passport quickly if it is lost or stolen, or contact you in case the Embassy or your relatives need to pass you an emergency message.
We will release information about you to others only in accordance with your wishes (as stipulated by the U. S. Privacy Act of 1966). Registration is now conducted online only.
The U.S. Embassy Consular section can prepare a certified copy of your passport that you may carry with you in lieu of your passport. We attach a copy of the diplomatic agreement (in English and Russian) which authorizes use of a certified copy of the U.S. passport in lieu of carrying the original passport within Kazakhstan. To obtain a copy, please bring your passport to the Consular Section any workday from 2-4pm. The first copy is free of charge.
Kazakhstani Registration Requirements
Most foreigners, including U.S. Citizens, are required to register their stay in Kazakhstan with local authorities.

As proof of registration, you receive a migration card with two oval entry and registration stamps from the Border Service of Committee of National Security of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The automatic registration is valid for 3 months. For stays longer than 90 days, travelers should register with the Migration Police, (formerly know as the Office of Visas and Registration, or OVIR) in the jurisdiction where they reside in Kazakhstan.
